the Fine Line Between High Expectations and Setting Yourself Up for Failure

Do you have high expectations? You’re not alone! It's not uncommon for the women I coach to have high expectations - it's likely what has led them to success. However, there is a fine line between having high expectations and setting yourself up for failure... Do you know when your expectations are too high? Let's explore.

When we have high expectations for ourselves, it can be motivating and push us to achieve great things. However, when those expectations become unrealistic or unattainable, it can lead to disappointment, frustration, and even burnout. It's important to recognise when our expectations may be too high and to adjust them accordingly. Remember, success is not about perfection, but rather progress and growth over time. By finding a balance between high expectations and self-compassion, we can achieve our goals while also maintaining our well-being.

The Importance of Setting Healthy Expectations and Being Kind to Ourselves

It's also important to remember that our expectations may not always align with our current circumstances or abilities. For example, if we're going through a difficult time in our personal lives, it may be unrealistic to expect ourselves to perform at the same level in our work or other areas. Similarly, if we're just starting out in a new field or skill, we may need to adjust our expectations and give ourselves time to learn and improve. It's okay to have high aspirations, but we also need to be kind and patient with ourselves along the way. Ultimately, by setting healthy expectations and being compassionate towards ourselves, we can cultivate a sense of resilience and self-worth that will serve us well in all areas of our lives.

How to set realistic expectations

  1. Start by identifying your values. Download a free workbook to help you with this step.

  2. Make a comprehensive list of all your current projects and commitments. Ensure that nothing is left out.

  3. Take a moment to check in with yourself. Does the list feel overwhelming? If so, it may be time to reassess.

  4. Determine what needs to be let go of and create a plan to do so.

  5. Reexamine your list. Would those who know you best consider it too much? If so, be firm with yourself and identify at least one more thing to let go of, then make a plan to do so.

Remember, setting realistic expectations is not about lowering our standards or settling for less. It's about being kind and compassionate towards ourselves, recognising our limitations, and working towards our goals in a way that supports our overall well-being. So take some time to reflect on your own expectations and make the changes necessary to ensure that you're setting yourself up for success, both personally and professionally. With a healthy mindset and a solid plan in place, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
